Welcome . . .

On May 10, 2013 ten eager students and their director Carrie Graham arrived in Cape Town to begin what is sure to be an amazing four weeks. The University of Connecticut’s Service Learning Study Abroad in Cape Town is designed to facilitate greater understanding of South Africa’s troubled past while providing opportunities to witness its vibrant hope for the future. While living, learning, and working in one of most beautiful settings in the world, students are placed at various service learning sites while participating in classes intended to help contextualize their experiences, expand their horizons and develop a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a global citizen.

As anyone who has been to Cape Town can attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people here. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some experiences of students participating in this first ever 4 week "summer" program. Once again it is a privilege and honor to accompany a wonderful group of UConn students to a place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey

Cynthia finding her passion and her career path

Deborah, Alyssa, Cynthia, Daniella
One of my main reasons for going to Cape Town was to find  out my true passion in life and after being home for sometime I think I know what it is. For the past couple of  weeks I have been reflecting on my experiences and I've come to the realization that I do actually want to become a pharmacist. During the time I spent at Tafelsig clinic I shadowed doctors, nurses and pharmacists. Although I enjoyed working with the nurses and doctors, I really enjoyed learning about the different prescriptions. In fact I enjoyed working with the doctors and nurses more than the pharmacist but when I came home and read my journal entries I realized that the reason I enjoyed working with them so much was because I enjoyed learning about which medicines they were going to prescribe the patients and seeing if I knew anything about the prescription.
Here in Connecticut I work in a pharmacy and when I compare it to the pharmacy in Tafelsig Clinic I begin to realize how privileged we are. Having only one computer in the pharmacy was difficult but the Pharmacist did a great job to make do with what they had. Now instead of retail pharmacy I would like to pursue a career more towards the clinical side of pharmacy. Clinical pharmacy involves working directly with doctors and patients to figure out the optimal treatment for the patients. Tafelsig clinic did not not only teach me about working in a clinic, it also showed me what career path I want to take in future and because of that I will never forget what I learned there.
