Welcome . . .

On May 10, 2013 ten eager students and their director Carrie Graham arrived in Cape Town to begin what is sure to be an amazing four weeks. The University of Connecticut’s Service Learning Study Abroad in Cape Town is designed to facilitate greater understanding of South Africa’s troubled past while providing opportunities to witness its vibrant hope for the future. While living, learning, and working in one of most beautiful settings in the world, students are placed at various service learning sites while participating in classes intended to help contextualize their experiences, expand their horizons and develop a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a global citizen.

As anyone who has been to Cape Town can attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people here. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some experiences of students participating in this first ever 4 week "summer" program. Once again it is a privilege and honor to accompany a wonderful group of UConn students to a place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey

Daniella experiencing many different foods

so many choices...

food food food! I love food. My expectations coming to Cape Town was not very good. I assumed the worst, mainly because of the ignorant comments my friends and family members were embedding into my head. But they were completely off. I had the some of the best experiences going out and trying the different foods. The first restaurant I remember going to was Nandos. I remember ordering chicken tenders with rice and got something unexpected. The chicken tenders in the US are usually deep fried, but not at Nandos! They served chicken tenders that were just grilled, which is probably much healthier. I have never been to a "fancy" restaurant before going to the Two Oceans Restaurant. It was such a beautiful restaurant and the food was so delicious. The food was plated so nicely with different garnishes and colors. It was such an exciting experience. Naive me, I thought that I would be only experiencing South African cuisines, but that was not the case. We went to Addis, an authentic Ethiopian Restaurant. I have never had Ethiopian food, so was a bit hesitant. It was quite the experience sharing and eating around one platter. They had an assortment of different meats such as; lamb, chicken, beef, and shrimp. There were also beans and tomatoes which were so good. We also went to Chai Yo, a Thai inspired restaurant. Then we went to other "take-away" type establishments such as Debonares and Lyras. They also had similar places such as McDonald's and KFC. But I would say the best places that had the best foods would have to be Vernon's Braai and Marita's flat. I will never forget those amazing cheese biscuits.
