Welcome . . .

On May 10, 2013 ten eager students and their director Carrie Graham arrived in Cape Town to begin what is sure to be an amazing four weeks. The University of Connecticut’s Service Learning Study Abroad in Cape Town is designed to facilitate greater understanding of South Africa’s troubled past while providing opportunities to witness its vibrant hope for the future. While living, learning, and working in one of most beautiful settings in the world, students are placed at various service learning sites while participating in classes intended to help contextualize their experiences, expand their horizons and develop a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a global citizen.

As anyone who has been to Cape Town can attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people here. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some experiences of students participating in this first ever 4 week "summer" program. Once again it is a privilege and honor to accompany a wonderful group of UConn students to a place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey

Chivelle's amazing game drive

Going on the game drive was amazing!! So far this has been one of my favorite trips.  Before going on the drive, I didn’t expect to be so close to the animals, I really thought that it was going to be a 20 minute drive and that we would barely see any animals, but it was the complete opposite. We saw every animal possible…from zebras and spring boks to elephants and hippos to lions. Seeing these animals so close and not a lot of barrier separating the both of us, it was pretty cool. The animals were all peaceful and didn’t seem to have a worry in the world. It was nice to see different animals coexist in one environment and it made me realize that humans can barely coexist in one environment.  Back home, I am always hearing about some type of violence between a group of young people and it surprises me that people can’t just live in one place without any problems whatsoever. Usually the problems that people fight over are usually something foolish. During the game drive, I saw how the zebras and spring bok were in one area and there was no problems, they just continued to eat on the grass and go on about their day. This made me wonder why can’t people just do the same thing? Why must there be so much violence and pain around us?  If there is any violence between the animals, it is usually for a good reason such as territory or they’re hunting for food for their family. When humans engage in violence it is usually because one wants to have power over the other.

After I made the comparisons between the animals and humans, I took more time to admire the animals and learned some new information about them and about the Aquilla Game Reserve.  Some new information I learned is, the difference between a male and female zebra is the thickness in the neck, the male has a thicker neck than the female; the lioness is usually more protective of her mate; all animals usually give a warning sign when they are going to attack, except the buffalo, you pretty much never know when and if they are going to charge at you.  My favorite animals were the lions and the cheetahs!  The cheetahs were so adorable and one of them made the cutest sounds, I couldn’t help but gush at it!!  It was really nice to know that Aquilla rescues animals from being hunted and extinction. It’s nice knowing that there are still people and places in the world that still care for the animals in the world and will do whatever they can in order to save the animals.

The resort that we stayed at was beautiful and was one of the nicest places I have ever stayed in.  The rooms really did reflect the safari theme and had pictures of all the animals on the reserve around the room. It was nice to get away from Rondebosch for a day and just be able to experience something different. Overall, it was one of the best trips and fulfilled every expectation I had!
