Welcome . . .

On May 10, 2013 ten eager students and their director Carrie Graham arrived in Cape Town to begin what is sure to be an amazing four weeks. The University of Connecticut’s Service Learning Study Abroad in Cape Town is designed to facilitate greater understanding of South Africa’s troubled past while providing opportunities to witness its vibrant hope for the future. While living, learning, and working in one of most beautiful settings in the world, students are placed at various service learning sites while participating in classes intended to help contextualize their experiences, expand their horizons and develop a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a global citizen.

As anyone who has been to Cape Town can attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people here. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some experiences of students participating in this first ever 4 week "summer" program. Once again it is a privilege and honor to accompany a wonderful group of UConn students to a place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey

Daniella's first day at CMES

Daniella & Leslie with learners at City Mission Educational Services
My first day at City Mission Educational Services was definitely not what I was expecting. We first started off meeting the staff and students, and also touring the different classrooms. Then we were given the opportunity to sit in on one of the classes. It just so happened to be the grade 11's Dramatic Arts class. All the students performed their very own monologues, which was breath taking. The stories they shared were so incredibly powerful and heart wrenching. It came to a point where tears began to swell into my eyes. I couldn't believe some of the situations these students had to face, but they were still persevering despite the pain they carried deep down inside. These students honestly changed my perspective on life in a way that was so unexpected.   To see such young individuals overcome their struggles, makes me more appreciative of the things I have in life that I often take for granted. The courage and bravery they have is such an inspiration for me to be a better person for myself, my family, and my community. The few days I was able to spend with the students was hands down one of the best experiences of this trip and of my life. I will never forget their desire to learn and their passion for school. It is so nice to see students wanting to learn and wanting to come to school with the goal of one day having a better future and not because they have to. Leaving the students on the last day was one of the hardest moments of my life. I had such a little time with them and I felt like we already had a connection, but despite that I will always remember the students at City Mission. I will continue to pray for a better future for them and a safe prosperous life. Lastly I would like to say thank you to Vernon for giving me the opportunity to be at City Mission, and I would also like to thank the teachers and students at City Mission for opening their school to me. I am honored and blessed to have had this amazing opportunity. Dankie to all!
